The Kissing Gourami is also known as the Kissing Fish and it can be found in Malaysia, Java, Thailand, Borneo and Sumatra. The length of the fish can get to 30cm (12 inches) and it needs a tank that is at least 90cm (36 inches) in length to live in. It will eat insects, plant matter, worms, dried food and crustaceans and it needs a water temperature of 24-28 degrees Celsius (75 to 83F).
The name of the fish comes from their habit of getting their lips in a pouting position, like they were trying to kiss. Apparently, the Kissing Gourami does this as a way to spar between each other, but this doesn’t hurt.
The forehead of the Kissing Gourami is a bit concave, especially when they’re young. Their color is green-olive usually, but you can see them in golden in some cases.
The length of a Kissing Gourami when they’re in the wild can get to 30cm (12 inches), but when you keep them inside an aquarium they will usually go up to 10cm (4 inches).
The diet of the species is vegetarian for the most part. The aquarium where they are kept should have enough plants with tougher leaves, so they last for a longer period of time.
The species is a bit aggressive, so they should be kept with fish of similar size, even if they’re of a different species.
It’s not easy distinguishing between a female and a male of this species. They will start breeding when they’re at least three years old. The spawning process will begin either during the night or at dusk, after the courtship period is over.
Since the weight of the eggs is smaller than that of the water, they will usually go to the water surface. It takes two days for the eggs to hatch and another five days for the fish to start free swimming.
